Stephen finds his spark

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Stephen Clemence is hoping to tonight line up alongside the player that sparked his conversion from Liverpool to Spurs.

The midfielder was born in Liverpool but his family headed down south when dad Ray signed for Spurs in 1981 and Stephen was only three.

Due to his birthplace, Stephen remained loyal to the Reds for the next ten years until Spurs and one P. Gascoigne in particular tugged on his heartstrings and the conversion was complete.

"He was somebody I really admired when I was younger and was the reason I switched my allegiance to Tottenham," recalled Clem ahead of tonight's tribute match against DC United, where Gazza is set to feature.

"I was born in Liverpool and when we came down from there I still supported them until I was about ten years old.

"Then Gazza came to Tottenham and in the season we got to the Cup final, unfortunately the one where he did his leg, he switched me over to being a Spurs fan from there."

This will not be the first time though that Clem has been on the same pitch as his boyhood hero.

"The first time was when I was a mascot in my dad’s benefit match and he was playing just after Italia 90. I’ve got a picture at home from the evening.

"Then, I’d only played about ten first team games and got to play against him when he was at Middlesbrough. John Barnes was another player I greatly admired and I got to play against him when he was at Newcastle.

"It’s nice to get to play with them — I couldn’t get near them though!"
