STEP in the right direction

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Last month the Club was proud to host our first STEP day for adults with learning difficulties.

STEP stands for Special Training Experience Programme and is an organisation that has been set up by volunteers to provide men and woman with special needs who have left school with a safe and fun environment to play and enjoy sport.

Over 25 adults with learning difficulties took part, encouraged by around 20 spectators. Such was the success of the day that this month the Club will be hosting the very first STEP 6 aside adult league, here at our indoor facility at White Hart Lane.

Tony Reid who is one of the STEP volunteers is looking forward to getting the league under way:

“Our main aim since starting STEP in 2003 has been to launch the STEP six-a-side league.

"Finding a suitable venue with access and facilities that provide a safe and enjoyable environment was naturally vitally important to our players.

"Having the support of a top club like Tottenham Hotspur is fantastic and we can’t thank them enough for their help.

"Playing the STEP league White Hart Lane adds an increased competitive element to the game and gives the players the focus to go out, enjoy themselves and play well. We’re really looking forward to getting the league under way and hopefully more and more people will get involved.”

James Isaac, the Club’s disability coach commented: “I’m delighted that we will be hosting the STEP league here at White Hart Lane. The first training session we held was very successful and it was obvious immediately that there is enough demand for this kind of activity to do it on a regular basis. All of the participants gained a lot of confidence and pride through taking part and I’m sure future players will benefit in the same way.”

The STEP league is open to suitable adults, male or female aged over 16 with special needs in North London and we are looking for more players, teams and volunteers to join us. So please get in touch!
