Steffen welcomes striker fight

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Steffen Iversen has welcomed increased competition for places up front in Glenn Hoddle’s new era at the Lane.

Our Norwegian hitman was on target for the first time in pre-season in the 3-1 win in our second friendly against Swindon Town on Tuesday night.

It’s an important pre-season for Steffen. Injury meant he was unable to show new boss Glenn Hoddle what he could do last season and the arrival of Teddy Sheringham means he is up against Sergei Rebrov, Teddy, Les Ferdinand, Willem Korsten, Chris Armstrong and, if selected up front, Gary Doherty. Youngsters Steven Ferguson and Yannick Kamanan are also creeping into the spotlight.

But Steffen sees the competition as nothing but positive.

“It’s good because we’ve struggled before with always having strikers injured and ended up with none of the main strikers fit,” he said. “It’s great that Teddy has come back to the club and I hope he does well for us.

“You need competition. If you want to be in the top six you need competition for every place. Now we have a few more signings and that can only make the team better.”

Steffen has been delighted with how our summer recruits - Teddy, Gus Poyet and Goran Bunjevcevic — have settled.

“The new players have been great,” he added. “Gus has been great in the two matches we’ve played. He’s a nice man, smiling all the time and that’s great for team spirit.

“Goran is the same, speaks very good English and he’s come out to lunches between sessions. That’s been great. Of course, we know Teddy from before anyway.”

And his own state of play? “I feel okay,” he confirmed. “I’ve just come back from injury but I feel good, the head feels good, the knee feels good and I’m just looking forward to the start of the season now.”
