Stef: You're better than that
English Barclays Premiership
Steffen Freund has told English football: “You are better than that.”
Our German midfield marauder naturally walked out of Wembley Stadium a happy man on Saturday night after Germany’s 1-0 win against England in the World Cup qualifying match.
In the end Wembley’s finale was somewhat of a damp squib and the day was capped by Kevin Keegan’s shock resignation.
Former German international and Euro96 winner Freund is as equipped as anyone in the German camp — he gave coach Rudi Voller a few pointers before the game last week - to comment on England having played in the Premiership at the Lane for 18 months since his arrival from Borussia Dortmund in January 1999.
Having watched from the stands, he said: “I would say England is better than what they showed against Germany but if you play at home and you have to win then there is a lot of pressure now in football.
“I don’t think England closed down well enough to win the ball back in the German half. Then you bring pressure to the German defence and then you have chances. The English team did not do enough.
“If you want to win you have to do more and I think this is the key. More closing down, more fight - even for the people in the stadium.”
