Stef targets goal-d rush

English Barclays Premiership

Steffen Iversen has turned on the tap — now he hopes the goals will start pouring again.

Top scorer for the last two seasons, Iversen bagged his first goal of the campaign at the ninth attempt in the Worthington Cup second round, second leg win against Brentford.

It has not been through want of trying — the striker, who has played in a deeper role of late, has found goalkeepers in inspired form in recent weeks. Indeed, it looked like Brentford’s excellent Olafur Gottskalksson would keep Iversen at bay again on Tuesday night until the Norwegian was in the right place at the right time to tap home the rebound from Oyvind Leonhardsen’s shot from two yards.

Now he’s hoping to double his tally at Elland Road on Saturday. Iversen said: “It is important for strikers to get off the mark.

“I’m playing a little deeper and it’s different from last year but I’ve had the chances and should definitely had scored more goals than I have so far.

“Hopefully now I’ve scored one more will follow and it will take some of the pressure off. I think we’ve actually played quite well though — it’s just the goals that have been missing.”

Iversen knows how tough it will be at Elland Road — but insists we’ll be out for a win.

He added: “It’s always going to be tough against Leeds and even more so after their result against Besitas in the Champions’ League.

“They will be confident but they have had a few bad results so the opportunity is there to beat them.

“What happened last season is all forgotton now but it will still be a battle out there. It will be tough, hard and physical but we will go out to win it.”
