Opta Index Tottenham Hotspur Player of the Month — Jermain Defoe
England poacher Jermain Defoe picks up his second Opta player of the month award for Tottenham this season after leading his team to four victories and a draw in December. The former West Ham man has been central to Tottenham’s resurgence under Martin Jol and looks set to shine for both club and country in 2005.
The England international bagged four goals this month including a memorable hat-trick against Southampton and created another with a sublime chip, resulting in Defoe having a hand in half of Tottenham’s 10 goal haul for December. Only four other teams managed more goals in the final month of 2004.
Defoe also hit a total of 13 shots on target in December, more than any other player in the top flight. While his energy and enthusiasm is also borne out in the 11 occasions he was caught offside this month. Only Birmingham’s Clinton Morrison fell foul of the referee’s assistant more often.
Taking the runner-up place for the month is Michael Brown. The former Sheffield United schemer has quietly gone about establishing himself in the heart of the Spurs midfield and is now flourishing under the tutelage of Martin Jol.
Brown’s combative qualities came to the fore in December, with the 27-year-old attempting more tackles than any other player in the Premiership, putting his foot in on 38 occasions. Brown won 28 of those challenges, again a high in the top division.
The midfielder has also contributed to Tottenham’s attack, providing two goal assists and bagging one goal himself with a rocket of a shot against Norwich.
Third in the rankings is Frederic Kanoute. The fleet-footed attacker claimed two goals in December and set up seven goal-scoring opportunities for his team-mates, the second-highest total at White Hart Lane. Kanoute’s physical presence also added an extra dimension to the Spurs attack. The Mali international won 15 fouls for his team this month, the fourth-highest total in the Premiership while he also proved to be an able target-man for the Lilywhites, getting his head to 22 flick-ons.
