Opta Index Player of the Month — Jermain Defoe
Tottenham’s Jermain Defoe scoops the Opta Player of the Month award for the third time this season thanks to another series of strong performances up front. March concluded with Defoe once again being called up to the England squad, so Sven Goran Eriksson must have been impressed with the forward.
Defoe managed one goal in three games during March but more impressive was his relentless accuracy in front of the nets. He hit the target with seven of his eight shots in the month, giving him a staggering shooting accuracy of 88%. If Defoe is given a chance in the World Cup qualifiers against Northern Ireland and Azerbaijan, he is unlikely to let his country down.
Second best is another England international: Ledley King. The classy defender is the only Tottenham outfield player to have not missed a single minute of Premiership action this season and King played his allotted 270 minutes in March.
King made 21 clearances during the month, considerably more than any other Spurs player. He also made 121 passes, second only to midfield metronome Michael Carrick.
Third is midfielder Michael Brown. The former Sheffield United player hurtled into 19 tackles during March; almost double any other Tottenham player. Brown is fast becoming a favourite with the fans at White Hart Lane and his partnership with Michael Carrick is looking stronger by the week.
Frank Arnesen has said that he wants to build a Tottenham squad comprising young English talent and the results of the March Player of the Month certainly vindicate his mission.
