STAN'S MAN

Steve Staunton has described Terry Dixon as a 'special talent' after calling the 16-year-old into the senior Republic of Ireland squad.

Steve Staunton has described Terry Dixon as a 'special talent' after calling the 16-year-old into the senior Republic of Ireland squad.

The schoolboy who is yet to join our Academy full-time was one of 29 players named by manager Staunton - nicknamed 'Stan' - for a training camp in the Algarve and friendly international against Chile in Dublin on May 24.

He joins Spurs team-mates Robbie Keane – the Republic’s skipper and record goalscorer – Andy Reid and Stephen Kelly.

Terry’s call came after Staunton kept an eye on his performances for the Under-17s – he scored vital goals and impressed the new boss when he saw him play in the UEFA qualifiers six weeks ago in Dublin.

“He’s a talented boy with very good ability and is highly thought of at Spurs,†Staunton told the fai.ie. “There were one or two others that I thought of bringing but I can only take so many.

“It will be good to take him along to the camp to show him what we’re about. I said to Sean (McCaffrey) and Don (Givens) that I’d like to reward at least one player for doing well and I’ve decided to bring him.

“I feel that he’s a special talent and if he progresses nicely, we’ll see the benefits in a couple of years.â€Â
