Spurs XI 0-1 QPR - Tim pleased despite defeat
Tim Sherwood had few complaints as our Spurs XI team lost 1-0 against QPR in Tuesday's friendly at Spurs Lodge.
Heurelho Gomes, back from injury, Danny Rose, Jake Livermore and Giovani all started as we dominated but couldn't find a way through QPR's well-organised defence, marshalled impressively by Danny Shittu.
"It was a good performance," said Tim, our Technical Co-Ordinator. "The lads played really well, moved the ball well and overall, we’re happy.
"Danny and the first-team lads were able to blow the cobwebs off and get valuable game time, that was important.
"That’s what these games are about, developing young players and for the first team squad to play in when needed.
"We opened them up time and time again but we lacked the final finish. It was the one of the most one-sided 1-0 defeats you’ll ever see!"
Cristian Ceballos drilled just wide after 13 minutes and then looked odds-on to score from Giovani's cross, but Shittu managed to clear in front of goal.
Massimo Luongo was denied one-on-one, Gomes denied Mo Shariff and then Ceballos drilled inches wide.
The winner arrived on the half-hour when Shariff's initial shot was blocked well by Bongani Khumalo but the ball rebounded back to Shariff, who smashed home from close range.
Giovani set-up Nathan Byrne and Khumalo before the break, but both chances went begging.
Into the second half and Dean Parrett curled a free-kick just over and Ceballos clipped a one-on-one chance onto the roof of the net.
The team continued to get into great positions in and around the box but couldn't carve out a clear-cut opening.
The final chance arrived five minutes from time when Cameron Lancaster's free-kick was palmed out into the path of Ceballos, who couldn't muster the power on his follow-up to beat the goalkeeper.
Spurs XI: Gomes; Byrne, Khumalo (Veljkovic, 46), Uvini (Pritchard, 58), Rose; Parrett (Bentaleb, 58), Livermore, Luongo; Fredericks (Parrett back on, 72), Giovani (Lancaster, 46), Ceballos.
