Tottenham HotspurJan Vertonghen this week became the 13th Spurs player and our first defender to register a goal for their national team at the World Cup finals.
His winner against South Korea on Thursday was the 18th netted by one of our men at the tournament.
Only Gary Lineker with four at Italia ‘90 and Jurgen Klinsmann with three at France ‘98 have scored more than a single goal at the finals whilst on our books.
Here’s a run-down of the World Cup goals our players have scored...
June 17, 1958: Terry Medwin scored Wales’ second goal in a 2-1 win over Hungary in a Group 3 2nd place play-off match at Stockholm.
June 2, 1962: Jimmy Greaves scored England’s third goal in their 3-1 Group 4 victory against Argentina at Rancagua.
June 12, 1970: Alan Mullery opened the scoring and Martin Peters added the second for England in their 2-3 quarter-final defeat by West Germany at Leon.
June 15, 1982: Steve Archibald scored Scotland’s fifth goal in their Group 6 encounter with New Zealand, sealing a 5-2 scoreline at Malaga.
June 18, 1982: Ossie Ardiles netted Argentina’s fourth goal in their 4-1 Group 3 victory against Hungary at Alicante.
June 11, 1990: Gary Lineker opened the scoring in a 1-1 Group F encounter between England and the Republic of Ireland at Cagliari.
July 1, 1990: Gary Lineker converted two penalties, the first to level at 2-2 and then the extra time winner in England’s 3-2 quarter final victory over Cameroon at Naples.
July 4, 1990: Gary Lineker equalised in the 1-1 draw between England and West Germany in the Turin semi-final.
June 15, 1998: Jurgen Klinsmann scored Germany’s second goal in a 2-0 Group F win over the USA at Paris.
June 18, 1998: Allan Nielsen put Denmark ahead in their 1-1 Group C draw with South Africa at Toulouse.
June 25, 1998: Jurgen Klinsmann again scored the second goal for Germany in a 2-0 Group F win over Iran at Montpellier.
June 26, 1998: Darren Anderton put England 1-0 ahead in their 2-0 Group G win against Colombia at Lens.
June 29, 1998: Jurgen Klinsmann scored his 47th and last international goal to equalise in Germany’s 2-1 win over Mexico in the round of 16 tie at Montpellier.
June 12, 2002: Milenko Acimovic put Slovenia ahead in their 1-3 Group B defeat by Paraguay at Jeju.
June 23, 2010: Jermain Defoe scored the only goal as England beat Slovenia in Group C at Port Elizabeth.
June 26, 2014: Jan Vertonghen netted the only goal as Belgium defeated South Korea in Group H at Sao Paulo, thus becoming the first Spurs defender ever to score at the tournament finals.
