Spurs vs United - Jan's unfinished business

29 November 2013|Tottenham Hotspur

Jan Vertonghen feels he has a score to settle when we take on Manchester United this weekend.

The Belgian defender’s marauding run in the opening moments of last season’s famous 3-2 victory at Old Trafford saw him weave his way into the box and fire past United goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard to put us in front – the ball taking a deflection off defender Jonny Evans on its way into the net.

But after the dubious goals panel deemed the strike to be an Evans own goal, Jan admitted he would love to erase his disappointment at the decision by getting on the scoresheet on Sunday as we welcome United to White Hart Lane.

"I think they said it was an own goal,” said Jan. “I didn’t agree at all and I still don’t agree now. I was quite disappointed that they took it away from me.

“But I hope I can score a real one on Sunday.”

Jan is looking forward to meeting the United challenge head-on at the Lane this weekend, as we seek a return to winning ways in the Premier League.

The spectre of last Sunday’s heavy defeat at Manchester City still looms large, but the 26-year-old has emphasised the determination among the players to respond positively.

“(The City result) puts a bit of pressure on Sunday but the mentality is good in the group and we are ready for it,” the defender added.
