Spurs vs City - Mauricio's preview
03 May 2015|Tottenham Hotspur
Mauricio Pochettino described Sunday’s big game against Manchester City as ‘an opportunity’ for the players to go out and perform in front of our fans at the Lane.
Our penultimate home match of the campaign pits us against a City team that have responded to a run of three defeats in four to claim back-to-back victories in the Premier League.
We’ve only lost two of our last nine in the Premier League and can go level on points in fifth with Liverpool with a win.
“It’s a very tough game, City are one of the best teams in England but this is an opportunity in front of our supporters to play well and try to win the game,” said Mauricio, who knows the team has nothing to fear having already beaten Arsenal and Chelsea this year at Lane.
“It’s true, but in the same way we know this is a very good team with very good players,” he added. “We always believe in our possibilities. We need to be strong and to try our best to win.”
Mauricio also knows the quality of the opposition means you can play well and still lose – just as we did at the Etihad in October, when we missed a penalty at 2-1 on the hour before conceding one ourselves, going down to 10 men and losing 4-1.
“This is the problem,” reflected Mauricio. “You can play well but when you have this type of team in front of you, maybe you can still lose. We need to be competitive, to be strong and we are motivated to finish the season well and to give a good performance.”
Mauricio’s Argentine compatriot Sergio Aguero did the damage at the Etihad with all four goals – he’s one ahead of Harry Kane on 21 in the Premier League goalscoring stakes. “He’s a great player, I don’t need to explain too much!” he said.
“He’s one of the best strikers in the world and it’s difficult to stop him but we need to try to do that and to believe in ourselves."
