Spurs v United - Mauricio's preview
09 April 2016|Tottenham Hotspur
Mauricio Pochettino says our progress from day one of the Premier League is there for all to see and, typically, is determined to see the team improve further.
We travelled to Old Trafford on August 8 and ended up losing somewhat unfortunately to an own goal in the first half.
That was United’s only effort on target as we performed well, shared possession and efforts at goal (nine each) but had more on target than the home side, forcing Sergio Romero into late saves.
Eight months later and we’re second in the Premier League having lost just four matches in 31, scored most goals (57) and conceded fewest (25).
Now we meet United again in another huge weekend.
“I think it’s clear our progress has been very good from the first game of the season,” said Mauricio.
“We’re all happy. It’s true we’re in the race to try to win the title, we’re second in the table and we have six games ahead to fight to the end. We now have a tough game against Manchester United.
“It’s difficult to remember the feelings from the first day but it’s true we deserved more.
“I’m happy with the season. We can always do better and that’s our mentality, we can improve but you know that the moment we’re in now we’ll try to give our best and fight for the three points.”
Dele Alli made his debut off the bench at Old Trafford and his progress - debut, first goal, first start and now seven goals, nine assists in the Premier League, 43 appearances in all competitions, England debut and goals, all as a teenager - has run concurrently with the team’s.
“It shows in football that everything is possible,” added Mauricio. “You need to believe, never give up and try to improve. We can all learn about that. In football, you need to work to try and improve, your mentality is important and that’s what has happened with different players and the team.”
