Tottenham Hotspur

FA Cup 5th Round

White Hart Lane

Saturday 17th February, 2001

Stockport County

This will be the first FA Cup meeting between these two sides in their history. First division Stockport County have never gone further than the fifth round in this competition, so the Premiership outfit should be clear favourites to continue what seems an almost inevitable pathway to the final.

Tottenham have won the FA Cup on eight occasions and with fans and players alike clinging to the 'year ends in a one' cliché, one can't help but feel that they may be right after all.

Following their narrow victory over minnows Leyton Orient and coming from behind against Charlton by scoring three goals in five minutes in previous rounds, it would appear that the gods are smiling down on the boys from White Hart Lane.

The visitors to north London will be hoping to bring their form in the league to the cup, having lost just twice in their last 11 Division One fixtures - including an impressive 2-0 win over the leaders Fulham. However, Andy Kilner's men were defeated this week at home to Preston.

County needn't be overawed by their Premiership opposition and may well feel confident about troubling either Neil Sullivan or Ian Walker on Saturday. The Hatters have scored 40 goals this season - a number that belies their lowly position in the league - although only bottom club Sheffield Wednesday have conceded more than Stockport's total of 51.

Tottenham's league form has improved considerably over the last six games, coinciding from when young Gary Doherty has been introduced into the defence. Indeed, Spurs have conceded only two goals since the versatile player moved into the back-line alongside Chris Perry and Sol Campbell - and both of those were against Newcastle in one match.

It is easy to see why Doherty has made such a big impact. The former Luton star has been commanding in the air and has gone in for more tackles per game than any other defender at the club (Doherty 4.0, Perry 3.9, Campbell 3.7 and Carr 2.5).

And it is an area of the game that Tottenham desperately need to improve, given that the Londoners currently hold the poorest tackling success rate in the Premiership of 70%, and earlier in the season seemed to lack bite - especially away from home.

But with Spurs at home on Saturday, Stockport will do well to even earn a replay. George Graham's men have not lost at White Hart Lane in the top flight, although first division Birmingham did manage to knock the Lilywhites out of the Worthington Cup there back in October by three goals to nil. So there's hope for County yet!

Spurs have been hit by injuries to Stephen Carr (abdominal) and Darren Anderton (Achilles). They join Ben Thatcher, Chris Armstrong and Chris Perry on the treatment table. Stockport new signing Glynn Hurst is likely to feature at some point in Saturday's clash.
