Spurs v Qarabag - Mauricio's preview

17 September 2015|Tottenham Hotspur

Mauricio Pochettino has been impressed with what he’s seen of Qarabag.

We kick-off our Europa League, Group J campaign against the Azerbaijan champions at the Lane this evening (8.05pm).

Qarabag tested Celtic to the full over two legs in Champions League qualifying before beating Swiss side Young Boys home and away to reach the group stage of the Europa League.

They’ve only lost once in 10 games this season - at Celtic Park - and conceded one goal in six European matches.

“This is a good team, a team that play in a good way with a good philosophy,” said Mauricio. “They pushed Celtic all the way.

“They always try to play from the back, on the floor and are a dynamic and aggressive team in offensive situations. We need to have the right mentality for this game and we’re ready to compete.”

Mauricio underlined the importance of winning your home games in Europe - not least as we’re in a testing group with Anderlecht and Monaco.

“That’s our objective,” he said. “We need to win because this group stage is difficult with Qarabag, Anderlecht and Monaco.

“It’s important to win at home. We respect Qarabag, We will play with aggression.”
