Spurs v Monaco - Mauricio's preview

10 December 2015|Tottenham Hotspur

Mauricio Pochettino is delighted to have a place in the knockout stage of the Europa League in the bag ahead of tonight’s final group match against Monaco.

Faced with a tricky group against Monaco, Anderlecht and Qarabag, we secured our place in the last 32 with a victory in Azerbaijan in MD5.

A point against Monaco will now absolutely guarantee top spot in Group J and the fact that the French side - beaten just three times in 17 games in Ligue 1 - need to win to progress underlines Mauricio’s view that we’ve passed a tough test with flying colours.

“It’s a strong group, Monaco still need to win and Anderlecht and Qarabag could still get to the next round,” he said. “It’s for that we feel happy because with one game to play we are already in the next round.

“I think Qarabag have surprised everyone. Nobody believed they would show the performances they have showed. It was a tough group and we’re happy we go to the next round before the last game.”

We might only need a point to be sure of first place but Mauricio is looking for all three.

“Our mentality is right because we want to win this game,” he added. “It’s true we’re in the next round, which was our objective from the beginning but we’re in a good moment and our motivation is to try to win the game to be sure of finishing in first place.”
