Teddy Sheringham
Ruud van Nistelrooy

It is a case of past meets present on Saturday when former Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham goes head-to-head with the Red Devils' new boy Ruud van Nistelrooy at White Hart Lane.

Just four months ago Sheringham was still an active member of England's elite football club, but the arrival of the hotshot Dutchman combined with the lure of returning to his old stomping ground proved enough to prompt a move back to the capital.

Manager Glenn Hoddle was clearly elated to have landed a player of Sheringham's class and maturity in his pursuit of success in north London, stating: "Teddy is someone who has used his head instead of his legs for years and his intelligence has grown with age. He is like a good wine." Therefore the fans should witness an intriguing battle of styles and wit when Sheri faces van the man.

Both players have enjoyed a scoring start to the campaign, although neither has exceeded the hype as of yet. Sheringham had to wait almost a month for his first Premiership strike, while van Nistelrooy scored a brace on his league debut but did not have cause to celebrate again until three games later.

But honours are now even with a hat trick of goals apiece and the stage perfectly set for the ensuing showdown.

On paper van Nistelrooy represents the more dangerous prospect of the two marksmen having beaten the 'keeper with a quarter of his efforts on target - seven percentage points better than Sheringham.

The former PSV Eindoven star has landed 58% of his shots on target - Sheringham has failed to trouble the 'keeper with even half of his efforts - and will be keen to maintain his scoring frequency of a goal every 114 minutes on average.

But as Hoddle mentioned, Sheringham is an intelligent player and has used his vision to set up a goal for his team-mates, proving that he is just as valuable even when he is not putting the ball in the back of the net himself. Although in true Manchester United style, van Nistelrooy is no slouch in possession and his passing accuracy highlights his ability to feed his colleagues.
