With the World Cup approaching, the clamour for places in the squad is turning into something like a high-stakes game of musical chairs. When Tottenham entertain Liverpool there will be three England forwards on the pitch. Michael Owen is a cert to start for the national side in the Far East, but either Emile Heskey or Teddy Sheringham could play alongside him. Opta ran the rule over the two hopefuls.

Heskey already plays alongside Owen for Liverpool and showed that there is more to his game than strength and power when he came off the bench to set up Owen's second against Derby last week. This season Heskey has set up seven goals in the league for the Reds and only Steven Gerrard can better that.

Sheringham's creativite contribution and ability to weight a pass to within a gram is well documented, but he has only set up three goals in the league this season. His pass completion rate of 75% is very good for a forward though and his age has not diminished his ability as Sheringham's speed was always that of thought, not of running.

The Liverpool striker is set to sign a new contract to prolong his tenure at Anfield, but some critics have said that his presence in the side encourages the team to play a more direct approach. The fact the Heskey as made 234 flick-ons this season - only Duncan Ferguson has made more - seems to back this up, but his role as a foil for Owen seems to work, despite not being the most aesthetically pleasing way to play the beautiful game.

It is worth noting though, that Heskey has only hit the target with a surprisingly low 16 shots. He might be great at holding up the ball, but his apparent low number of shots does mean that there is even more pressure on Owen to get the goals. It is interesting to note though, that half of those 16 shots have ended up in the back of the net. Sheringham has hit the target 36 times this season in the Premiership and has scored nine times.

Some people may focus on the fact that Spurs could help Arsenal win the league with a positive result against Liverpool - although Liverpool themselves would require favours from bitter rivals Manchester United and Everton - but for the players there are huge stakes. Not least the final chances to show Sven Goran Eriksson that they are worth a place on the plane to Japan and Korea in the summer.
