Spurs v Everton - Mauricio's preview
29 August 2015|Tottenham Hotspur
Mauricio Pochettino is keen to avoid any slip-ups as we get set to welcome Everton to White Hart Lane today (Saturday, August 29).
Our last two Premier League outings, against Stoke City and Leicester City respectively, have seen us drop points from winning positions, having suffered a narrow defeat at Manchester United on the opening day.
With those results still fresh in everyone’s minds, Head Coach Mauricio has challenged the players to get themselves in front – and then stay ahead – against the Toffees.
“I think that we’ve deserved more from the first three games that we’ve played but it’s true that we’ve made some mistakes and we’ve conceded the possibility to get three points and this is where we need to improve and to compete better,” he said.
“I think we played better than Manchester United, Stoke City and Leicester but at the end of the day we took two points. We all realise that we need to compete better, improve on some things and this is what we have been working on.
“Everton is a good team but it’s important that we score and win the game. This is the most important thing.”
The Toffees have rattled in 10 goals in all competitions so far this term, including three in an away win at Southampton and another five in a Capital One Cup tie against Barnsley in midweek.
That fact isn’t lost on Mauricio, but he remains confident that we can contain Everton’s firepower and come up with a positive result ourselves.
“It’s true that they have big potential up front with Romelu Lukaku and company,” he added. “I watched their game in midweek and we expect a tough game, but we are ready to compete.
“It’s only the beginning of the season but it’s true that, for us, it’s important to start to gain wins.”
