Spurs v City U21s - Matt's preview

18 January 2016|Tottenham Hotspur

Concentration at the back is the name of the game for our Under-21s against Manchester City today (Monday, January 18), according to coach Matt Wells.

We return to Barclays Under-21 Premier League action against the Citizens at our Training Centre at 1pm, the game having been moved from its original evening time slot at Stevenage.

Having conceded five goals against Chelsea last week, Matt, who is leading the team today in the absence of Ugo Ehiogu, says the players have been working hard on sharpening up defensively ahead of taking on City in what is usually an open, entertaining fixture.

“What we were disappointed with last week was our defending of set pieces and we’ve since spoken about our mentality and concentration in the key moments,” he said.

“The first goal for Chelsea came in a period when we were very much on top and controlling the game, the second came immediately after we’d scored, the third straight after half-time, the fourth again when we were on top and the fifth goal in the 93rd minute, so they were all key moments where concentration is needed.

“Today we have to focus on getting our defensive mentality right. Our last three games against City have produced two 3-3 draws and a 2-1 win for us last season at Stevenage so we know what to expect from them – they’re similar to us in that they like to control the ball.

“It will be a good battle in terms of who dominates possession but for us, it’s more about doing things properly ourselves and making sure that, individually and collectively, our concentration, our aggression and the intensity of our defensive performance continues to improve.”
