Spurs v City - back in time
24 September 2015|Tottenham Hotspur
It's now over 25 years since Gary Lineker and Gazza thrilled the country at the 1990 World Cup - and they were given a hero's welcome back at the Lane against Manchester City in August, 1990.
Italia 90 is seen as a key point in modern football history, the summer where fans fell back in love with the game - and Gazza in-particularly for his wonderful performances on the field and character off it.
The club was rightly proud of their achievements in helping England to the semi-finals but as manager Terry Venables stated in his programme notes in our First Division opener against City, it was all about Spurs now!
The pair didn't fail to deliver. Gary scored twice and Gazza once to topple a City side including the likes of Colin Hendry, Peter Reid and Niall Quinn 3-1 at the Lane.
Programme Editor at the time and now Consultant Editor John Fennelly summed-up how the newspapers viewed the win in his 'Media Report' in the next home programme, and noted: "The People described Gazza as 'dealing out miracles' but Lineker again took the laurels: "for connoisseurs - like Bobby Moore applauding in the seat beside me - Lineker was the true star of the show"."
The team of 1990-91 went on to beat Arsenal in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley, again inspired by Gary and Gazza, before winning the trophy against Forest in May.
