Spurs v Borussia Dortmund - Mauricio's preview
17 March 2016|Tottenham Hotspur
Mauricio Pochettino has challenged the players to prove that they can do better against Borussia Dortmund in the second leg of our Europa League tie at White Hart Lane tonight (Thursday, March 17).
The German giants stormed into a 3-0 lead in our first leg meeting at Signal Iduna Park seven days ago, leaving us with it all to do when we reconvene in N17 this evening, kick-off 8.05pm.
Head Coach Mauricio acknowledged that players, staff and fans alike were thoroughly disappointed with the manner of last week’s defeat but, when asked how we stop Dortmund from dominating the play again tonight, he answered: “This is the feeling that we need to put out – I think that we were not good enough last week, we didn’t play well and this was the problem, that we allowed Borussia Dortmund to play better than us.
“We were not playing like we normally play and this was one reason why Dortmund was better than us. We need to show that last week was an accident and we need to try to play much better.”
Trailing by three goals already and with the knowledge that an away goal for Dortmund tonight would leave us needing to score at least five to progress, Mauricio has urged the players to approach the game with confidence.
“In football you always need to show belief,” he added. “At 3-0 down it becomes a difficult game because in front of us are Borussia Dortmund, one of the best teams in Europe, but we need to believe.
“I think it’s a good opportunity to show that we can do better than last week in Dortmund.”
There’s more from Mauricio in his exclusive column in tonight’s official matchday programme – on sale at the game for £3.50. Check out what else is included in our latest 100-page edition here.
