Spurs v AFC Wimbledon - Mauricio's preview
06 January 2018|Tottenham Hotspur
Mauricio Pochettino says respect is key to his near perfect record against lower-league teams so far at Spurs - and that won’t change as we face League One side AFC Wimbledon in the third round of the FA Cup on Sunday.
It’s a tie that sums up the magic of the FA Cup. AFC Wimbledon, underdog winners of the competition in the days of the ‘Crazy Gang’ back in 1988, back in FA Cup action at Wembley Stadium. They are currently 21st of 24 in League One but have lost just one of their last four and beat Charlton in round two.
Mauricio has a record of 10 wins and a draw in 11 against lower-league teams in the FA Cup and League Cup since arriving at the Club in 2014.
“The FA Cup is a magical competition,” said Mauricio. “Of course, AFC Wimbledon are in League One but we need to show respect and show that we are going to take the game in a good way.
“They are a team fighting at the bottom end of League One but they are difficult to assess. It’s the same as it was last season against Wycombe (we needed a late goal to win 4-3).
“They will be extra motivated to play at Wembley and it will be difficult because when you watch League One games it’s one level but after this motivation and the FA Cup, everything can change.
“The most important thing is to show respect to the competition and the opponent. For me, I don’t care if it’s Premier League, Championship or League One, you always need to respect the competition.”
