Spurs U21s 2-2 Sunderland - lads denied by late penalty

Our Under-21s were denied victory by a late penalty as it ended 2-2 against Sunderland in the Barclays U21 Premier League on Saturday.

We led twice at Spurs Lodge but were hauled back on both occasions by the Black Cats.

Jon Obika and Cristian Ceballos went close in the early stages and Ryan Noble fired wide for Sunderland before the opening goal on 40 minutes.

It was a fine goal as well as Alex Pritchard collected the ball on the edge of the box, nipped inside the defender and fired past Ben Wilson in the Sunderland goal.

Ceballos soon had another chance but shot at Wilson after good work from Yago Falque.

Unfortunately, the lead only last five minutes as Sunderland levelled before the break. David Vaughan's free-kick was met by Jordan Laidler, who struck the crossbar, but David Ferguson was there to head home.

Yago Falque

Into the second half and Pritchard had another striker at goal before Falque restored our lead, firing home from 10 yards after Nathan Byrne's cross fell into his path.

This led to our best spell as Ryan Mason's free-kick was saved by Wilson and the goalkeeper then got down to save a Ceballos effort from Falque's set-up. We then had a goal disallowed by the linesman's flag as Ceballos followed in Pritchard's shot.

Falque's effort was deflected just wide and Mason then lashed over from 20 yards.

However, when a third goal seem likely, Sunderland found an equaliser. Billy Knott crossed to the near post, Pritchard slid in with Mikael Mandron and was judged to have brought the Sunderland man down. Adam Reed made no mistake from the penalty spot.

Mason curled a final effort just wide in the 82nd minute as the honours ended even.

Sunderland: Wilson, Laing, Adams, Vaughan (Knott, 46), Egan, Ferguson, Reed, Gorrin (Mandron, 75), Noble (Deacon, 67), Laidlee, Lynch.
