Spurs TV special - happy 70th Pat!

12 June 2015|Tottenham Hotspur

The great Pat Jennings turns 70 today (Friday, June 12) - in this Spurs TV special, he tells us: 'I feel brilliant."

Regarded as the best goalkeeper in the world at his peak, Pat joined us from Watford in 1964 and went on to make 590 appearances in all competitions - second only behind Steve Perryman.

He won the FA Cup in 1967, League Cup in 1971 and 1973 and the UEFA Cup in 1972 while on a personal level, he was awarded the Football Writers Footballer of the Year title in 1973 and named PFA Player of the Year in 1976.

On the international front, Pat made his Northern Ireland debut in 1964 and went on to win 119 caps - a record at the time - and help take NI to the 1982 and 1986 World Cup Finals. His final competitive match was against Brazil in the Mexico finals, 1986.

Pat has coached at the club since the early 1990s and has held the title of goalkeeping consultant for a number of years. He is still a regular at the Training Centre, where young goalkeepers and Academy coaching staff alike reap the benefit of tapping into his wealth of experience.

So what is it like to turn 70?

"I feel brilliant," said Pat. "I can't believe I'm 70. Every year I think I might knock a couple off! I'm happy to be here at 70. I love working here with the younger goalkeepers, they always say 'thanks Pat' and I appreciate that.

"You think about coaching - throughout my early years at Watford and then onto Tottenham, I never had a goalkeeping coach! Hopefully what it took all those years for me to learn we can now get across to the kids at an early stage."

In this Spurs TV special, Pat answers the three most popular questions to come out of a host of questions submitted by fans on social media - the highlight of his Spurs career, the greatest opponent he faced and, of course, how he's kept such an immaculate head of hair over the years!
