Spurs TV - Michel on 'one of my best saves ever'

31 August 2016|Tottenham Hotspur

Michel Vorm has revealed he rates his early save from Philippe Coutinho in Saturday’s draw with Liverpool as one of his best ever.

The Dutch international stopper was in fine form between the sticks against the Reds, with a string of important interventions earning him Man of the Match honours from our supporters after the game.

Among his highlights was the stop he made from Coutinho with his outstretched right leg in the opening moments, while he also raced off his line to thwart Sadio Mane on more than one occasion.

He was finally beaten by James Milner’s penalty shortly before half-time but Danny Rose rescued a point for us in the second period, with the game ending 1-1.

Michel, 32, sat down to talk through some of his contributions in detail in the second instalment of Spurs TV’s new ‘In Focus’ feature. Watch the video at the top of the page now! Viewers on the SpursGo app can watch the highlights via the app’s Spurs TV section.

Here are some of Michel’s thoughts…

On the overall result
“When you play against teams like Liverpool with the quick players that they have up front, you have to be aware, especially when they counter-attack, and if you go 1-0 down just before half-time you know it’s going to be tough in the second half. In the end, though, I think we deserved at least a draw. Coming back from 1-0 down against Liverpool, you’ve got to be happy.”

On his early save from Coutinho
“The main thing is to wait as long as possible. My eyes were on (Roberto) Firmino and he could have shot so I was ready and when he passed it, I tried to wait as long as I could and not to gamble. At close range like that, I use my whole body so I used my feet and you could see what happened. Thankfully there was no rebound and the ball went quite dead so it was easy for me to pick up. I think it was one of the best saves I’ve ever made to be honest.”

On his acrobatic punch from Mane’s deflected drive, ultimately ruled off-side
“Again you focus on Mane’s shot. I think I was ready and it got a deflection, I was on the ground, I didn’t see the linesman to know it was off-side and I tried to get up as soon as I could and just make sure the ball was not inside the goal area. You have to be ready for everything and that’s the way we train with Toni Jimenez, the goalkeeping coach.”

On rushing out to tackle Mane
“It’s tricky but we play with a high line in defence and with the fast pace they have like with Mane up front, you need to be ready for the ball in between. I was hoping to come out with my hands because it was still inside the box but I was afraid because of the pace I had that if I got it with my hands I would probably slide out (of the box). It’s quite tricky so you try to time the tackle as well as you can and luckily for me it worked.”

On facing Milner’s penalty
“It’s a decision I made beforehand. I saw his last penalties and you have something in your mind but it’s unfortunate. These kinds of situations are 50-50 and it was a shame, just before half-time.”

On Danny Rose’s post-match praise for Michel, stating he ‘should be an inspiration for all players at the club’
“It’s very nice to hear that. We have a certain respect in the squad and it’s good for me when I get the chance to play to be important for the team. We work very hard, all of us. When you get the chance to play and then you hear things like this, it’s great.”
