Spurs trio play as Young Lions win again
Danny Rose, Adam Smith and Andros Townsend all featured as England Under-21s beat Austria 4-0 in Monday night's friendly at Brighton's Amex Stadium.
Andros started for only the second time at Under-21 level and completed the 90 minutes, earning his third cap. Danny also started, taking his tally to 27 caps before being substituted at half-time and Adam picked up cap number 10 after playing the second 45 minutes.
England were tested in the first half and Danny had to clear a shot off the line as the visitors pressed.
Andros, lining-up on the right, saw plenty of the ball throughout and set up chances for Nat Chalobah and Jonjo Shelvey, as well as taking a couple of decent strikes at goal himself.
The game changed just before the break when Austrian goalkeeper Richard Strebinger was sent off for handling outside the penalty area. Shelvey rifled home the free-kick for a 1-0 lead at half-time.
Austria were reduced to nine men when Patrick Farkas handled in blocking Josh McEachran's shot and received a second yellow card. McEachran slotted home from the penalty spot for 2-0 and it was one-way traffic from there.
Andros fired in another couple of efforts as both he and Adam were camped in Austria's half.
Connor Wickham and Marvin Sordell completed the 4-0 scoreline as England made it nine wins on the trot without conceding a goal.
That was the final friendly before this summer's European U21 Championships in Israel.
As England were cruising to friendly success, Jordan Archer started in goal for Scotland Under-21s, who kicked-off their qualifying campaign for the 2015 finals with a 3-0 win against Luxembourg at St Mirren Park.
Currently on loan at Wycombe, Jordan had to make an important save from David Turpel with the score at 1-0 in the second half.
Meanwhile, Academy defender Connor Ogilvie was an unused substitute again as England Under-17s lost their European U17 Championship qualifier 2-1 against Russia at Burton Albion. England must now beat Slovenia on Wednesday to have a chance of making the finals.
