Spurs stars past and present to appear in Wembley as Club launches support for local healthy living campaign

06 September 2016|Tottenham Hotspur

Harry Kane and Eric Dier* will be joined by the legendary Gary Mabbutt for a public autograph signing session tomorrow (Wednesday, September 7, 3.30–5.30pm) in the centre of London Designer Outlet (LDO), Wembley Park.

The trio will be meeting fans ahead of the upcoming UEFA Champions League campaign, during which the Club will play its home matches at Wembley Stadium.

Please note: Due to the high numbers of people expected to attend, we can only permit a maximum of one item per person for signing purposes. Alternatively, postcards for the Harry, Eric and Gary to sign will also be made available on the day.

Over the coming months, the Club is committed to engaging with residents in the Borough of Brent through a range of community initiatives and opportunities for fans to watch Tottenham Hotspur in action at Wembley.

As part of this, a ‘Spurs Nurse’ – the only qualified community health practitioner to be employed by a football club community scheme – will be delivering free Health Checks to members of the public at LDO during the signing session as part of the Club’s support for Brent Council’s ‘My Heart Beats for Brent’ campaign.

Sport England research shows that half of the Brent population is classified overweight and an estimated one in five obese. Meanwhile, over half of Brent residents aged 16 and over do not participate in 30 minutes of physical activity during a week.

With the support of Tottenham Hotspur, ‘My Heart Beats for Brent’ aims to encourage local residents to take part in at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day using the Borough’s facilities and open spaces.

The Tottenham Hotspur Foundation has successfully delivered over 4,000 community health checks – primarily aimed at men over the age of 35 reluctant to visit their GP – in Haringey and will now be rolling the programme out in Brent.

Mabbutt, a former Club captain who lifted the FA Cup at Wembley in 1991, said: “We are delighted to be playing our Champions League home matches at Wembley this season – a stadium synonymous with some of the most famous moments in the Club’s history.

“Wednesday’s autograph signing session represents a fantastic opportunity for our many fans in the area to meet their heroes and learn about opportunities to get closer to the Club.

“Given the Borough of Brent is becoming our temporary home, it is important for us as a Club to engage with the local community here as we do in Tottenham and we aim to use our unique appeal as a football club to promote healthy lifestyles amongst residents through the ‘My Heart Beats for Brent’ campaign.”

Cllr Krupesh Hirani, Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing, Brent Council, said: “We are delighted to welcome Tottenham Hotspur to Wembley and to have the club’s support for the ‘My Heart Beats for Brent’ campaign is brilliant.

“Whatever your age, there's strong scientific evidence that being physically active can help you lead a healthier and even happier life. People who do regular activity have a lower risk of many chronic diseases, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and stroke.

“I exercise regularly and my heart beats for Gladstone Park Run on Saturday mornings and for five-a-side football at Alperton Goals. There are so many fantastic facilities, clubs, classes and open spaces in Brent to get your 30 minutes a day. Start today and see the benefits to not only your waistline but your health too. Come along on Wednesday and find out more about the campaign, meet the players and get a free health check.”
