Spurs Ladies show their support for Bend It Like Beckham musical

Spurs Ladies welcomed cast members from the new musical Bend It Like Beckham to Hotspur Way today for a special training session ahead of their performance this evening.
The Ladies have been working with the cast for a number of months, teaching them football skills to perform on stage as part of the show which is currently running in London’s Phoenix Theatre in the West End.
Jan Vertonghen and Nacer Chadli came along to meet the players and cast after they too had just completed a training session. Jan and Nacer watched the musical’s leading ladies take to the pitch where they were mastering the art of free-kicks.
Jan said: “It’s great that Spurs Ladies have been involved in the Bend It Like Beckham musical. From what I’ve seen here today, it seems like the performers have learned a lot from our Ladies team as their skills are pretty good!”
During each performance of each show, one Spurs Ladies player stars alongside the cast on stage to do the more comprehensive ball skills which the dancers are unable to master.
Spurs Ladies striker Wendy Martin has been working with the Bend It Like Beckham cast and said of her involvement in the show: “When we first met the girls, most of them said they’d never even played a game of football before, let alone got up on stage doing tricks in front of an audience. Since we’ve been working with them, they’ve come a long way.
“It’s surreal being on the pitch in the morning and then on stage later that evening but I’ve really enjoyed the whole experience. I think it’s really important to get more young girls participating in football and I hope that our involvement with the Bend It Like Beckham musical will help to inspire more females to play.”
Bend It Like Beckham follows the story of a teenage girl who wants to follow her dream of playing football like her idol, David Beckham. For more information about the show, please visit www.benditlikebeckhamthemusical.co.uk
