Spurs Ladies enjoy success at National College Championships

Barnet and Southgate College’s ladies team - a Tottenham Hotspur Foundation Education and Football Development Centre - successfully competed at the British Colleges Sport National Championships, finishing third in their sport.

The team qualified by winning the regional trials in November, allowing them to go on to represent London against the East, North West, North East, Wales, East Midlands, West Midlands, South East, South West, Scotland and Yorkshire & Humberside.

Held at the University of Bath, The National Championships are the largest annual multi-sports competition of its kind in the country with more than 2,500 students and staff from further education colleges across England, Scotland and Wales competing in 51 events across 14 different sports.

Despite challenging weather conditions, Karolina Rapacka, Danni Albertsen, Lauren Picton, Kyra Irons, Faye Picton, Courtney Miller, Ayse Mustafa, Louise Bennett, Sophie McLean and Danni Crafton-Brown (pictured) played a rigorous ten games across the weekend seeing off strong sides from Wales, Scotland, Yorkshire & Humberside.

This is the first time since 1994 that London has been its own region, and therefore the students were the first representatives of the London Region at the Nationals since its formation.

The Tottenham Hotspur Foundation runs Development Centres in partnership with Barnet and Southgate College, St Thomas More College and Waltham Forest College.

They give young people classified as NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) the opportunity to re-engage with Further Education via the hook of playing representative football for their college and receiving Academy-standard coaching from Tottenham Hotspur.

The Education and Football Development Centre scheme was shortlisted for a prestigious Sport Industry Award in 2012.
