Spurs Diary - August

Looking ahead and back on events on the same day in years gone by.


1987    On tour in Sweden and Finland, young striker Shaun Close scores four times as we beat the Lansi Uudenmaan District 7-2 in Karjaa. Clive Allen also nets twice with a single for Chris Fairclough (pictured, above).

1993    We stage the Makita International Tournament at White Hart Lane but lose 4-0 in the final to Chelsea.


Dominic Ball’s 21st birthday.

Nacer Chadli’s 27th birthday.

1969    Roger Morgan’s goal gives us a 1-1 draw in a friendly at Hearts.

1997    David Ginola and Les Ferdinand, newly signed from Newcastle United, make their first home appearances in a Spurs shirt against Fiorentina in David Howells’s testimonial. Unfortunately we lose 2-0.


1952    Ossie Ardiles born in Cordoba – happy birthday Ossie!

1975    A Joe Kinnear penalty sees us beat NAC Breda 1-0 on our tour of West Germany and Holland.


1976    Chris Jones scores both our goals in a 2-1 friendly win at German side KSV Baunatal.

1984    Argentina World Cup winner Mario Kempes plays for us in a friendly at Enfield Town where we win 7-0.


SPURS v INTER MILAN, pre-season friendly, at Ullevaal Stadion, Oslo, 5pm local time (4pm UK)

1948    Future Spurs and England goalkeeper Ray Clemence (pictured, below) born in Skegness. He would join us from Liverpool in August, 1981. Birthday greetings Clem!


1967    Jimmy Greaves bangs in two as we draw 3-3 with Celtic at Hampden Park in a friendly. Alan Gilzean also scores.


1925    The great Eddie Baily, hero of our 1951 ‘Push and Run’ side, born in Clapton.

1976    Alfie Conn on target as we beat FV Bad Honnef 2-0. Gerry Armstrong also scores.


1977    On tour in Sweden, we beat Royal Union (Umea) 2-0 to reach the Nokia Cup Final. John Duncan and Ian Moores score.

1996    Jason Dozzell among our scorers as we win 3-1 at Southend.


1989    A double for Gary Lineker as we win 5-1 at Viking in Norway. Paul Stewart, Terry Fenwick (penalty) and Paul Gascoigne also hit the target.

1992    Neil Ruddock is our match winner in a single goal triumph at Watford.


1969    The Football League programme starts early due to the following year’s World Cup. We go down 3-1 at champions Leeds United. Jimmy Greaves is our marksman.

1994    New signing Jurgen Klinsmann bags his first Spurs goal at Shelborne in Dublin.


1987    Arsenal defeated 3-1 in Chris Hughton’s testimonial at White Hart Lane. Danny Thomas (pictured, below), Clive Allen and Nico Claesen all score.


1991    We share the Charity Shield with the Gunners following a goalless draw at Wembley.


1962    We win 5-1 at champions Ipswich Town to lift the Charity Shield.

1990    A goal from winger Paul Moran is enough for us to beat Sogndal on our Norwegian tour.

12    FRIDAY

1982    Graham Roberts bags a brace but we lose 3-2 at Ajax.

1995    Gary Mabbutt’s testimonial at White Hart Lane sees us lose 2-0 to Newcastle United.


EVERTON v SPURS, Premier League, at Goodison Park, 3pm

1951    Happy birthday to John Lacy who was born this day in Liverpool. Blakey still turns out for the Spurs Legends side.

1993    We win on the opening day at Newcastle thanks to Teddy Sheringham’s strike.

14    SUNDAY

1965    Goals from Eddie Clayton and Cliff Jones see us beat Valencia 2-1 in Malaga in the semi-final of the Costa del Sol Tournament.

1992    We start the season with a 0-0 draw at Southampton.

15    MONDAY

Clinton Njie’s 23rd birthday.

1998    Paolo Tramezzani makes his Spurs debut at Wimbledon where we are defeated 3-1.

2015    We go two up at Stoke through first half goals by Eric Dier (pictured, below) and Nacer Chadli but get pegged back to 2-2.



1981    Garry Brooke’s penalty gives us a single goal win at Aberdeen in a testimonial for Willie Miller.

2014    Eric Dier marks his Spurs debut with a late winner at West Ham.


1934    Double-winning right-back Ron Henry born in Shoreditch.

1990    Ray Clemence’s benefit match against West Ham at the Lane ends in a 4-1 Spurs win thanks to two goals from Gary Lineker (one a penalty) and one apiece from Gazza and Nayim.


1952    Ricky Villa born in Buenos Aires. Happy birthday Ricky!

1984    Two goals for Clive Allen in a 3-0 friendly win at Sheffield United.

19    FRIDAY

1986    Mark Falco’s our marksman in a 1-1 draw with PSV Eindhoven in Barcelona’s Juan Gamper Tournament.We lose the penalty shootout 4-3.

2009    Jermain Defoe bags a hat-trick in a 5-1 win at Hull.


SPURS v CRYSTAL PALACE, Premier League, at White Hart Lane, 3pm

1986    We beat AC Milan 2-1 in Barcelona with Mark Falco and Gary Mabbutt sharing our goals.

1994     A memorable 4-3 opening day triumph at Sheffield Wednesday where manager Ossie Ardiles fields five forwards. Jurgen Klinsmann (pictured, below, with Ossie) celebrates his first Premier League goal with a ‘dive’ – and is later stretchered off!


21    SUNDAY

1983    Bill Nicholson’s testimonial at White Hart Lane sees us draw 1-1 with West Ham. Alan Brazil scores for us.

1991    We have to play in the preliminary round of the European Cup Winners’ Cup so travel to Vienna where we just about beat Sparkasse Stockerau thanks to Gordon Durie’s sole strike.

22    MONDAY

1914    We face Arsenal at White Hart Lane in a friendly to raise money for the War Relief Fund. A crowd of 13,500 watches us lose 5-1 with Billy Minter our goalscorer.

1992    Neil Ruddock becomes the first Spurs player to be sent off in the Premier League – in a 2-2 home draw with Crystal Palace.


1961    Gary Mabbutt born in Bristol in what was to be a good year for the club on and off the pitch – happy birthday Mabbsy!

2009    We return from West Ham with a 2-1 Premier League win as we open up the season with four straight wins. Jermain Defoe nets against his former club with Aaron Lennon also on target.


2002    Jamie Redknapp scores his first goal for the club as we beat Aston Villa 1-0 at the Lane.

2004    Michael Carrick and Noe Pamarot sign.


UEFA Champions League group stage draw.

1962    A 6-1 win at Upton Park in Division One. Goals: Jimmy Greaves (2), Terry Medwin, John White, Cliff Jones and a John Lyall own goal.

2010    After losing 3-2 to Young Boys in the first leg of our Champions League play-off, we beat them 4-0 in the return at the Lane thanks to a Peter Crouch (pictured, below) hat-trick (one a penalty) and a single from Jermain Defoe.


26    FRIDAY

2007    Gareth Bale makes his Spurs debut at Manchester United where we lose by the only goal.

2014    End of an era as Michael Dawson leaves us for Hull City.


SPURS v LIVERPOOL, Premier League, at White Hart Lane, 12.30pm

1988    Our opening fixture of the season against Coventry City is called off on the morning of the game due to ongoing building works at the stadium. This meant Gazza making his Spurs debut at former club Newcastle the following week.

1997    Two goals for Les Ferdinand in a 3-2 home win over Aston Villa. Ruel Fox also nets.

28    SUNDAY

1962    Paul Allen born in Aveley and would join us from the Hammers in June, 1985. Happy birthday!

1982    Gary Mabbutt makes a goalscoring Spurs league debut in the 2-2 Division One draw with Luton Town at the Lane. Micky Hazard also scores.

29    MONDAY

1925    Jimmy Dimmock’s goal is enough to beat Arsenal at Highbury on the opening day of the Division One season.

1974    Bill Nicholson announces his resignation as manager after we lose our opening four games. He agrees to remain in charge until a replacement is found.


1930    Ted Harper scores five times in our 7-1 home rout of Reading at the start of our Division Two campaign.


1975    Glenn Hoddle (pictured, above) makes his Spurs debut as substitute at home to Norwich City. The game ends 2-2.


1977    A hat-trick for John Duncan in a 4-0 League Cup win over league new boys Wimbledon.

1991    A sad day for all Spurs fans with the news that former England left-back Cyril Knowles has died.
