Spurs connection at Airdrie

English Barclays Premiership

Former Spurs striker Steve Archibald has taken over as the new owner of Scottish first Division side Airdrie.

Archibald assumed control on Friday, and, in a further Tottenham twist, appointed former chief executive Peter day as chairman.

The former Scottish international agreed terms with the liquidators for the purchase of the crisis club and the take-over was approved by shareholders.

Team manager Gary Mackay has been axed, and Archibald has brought in former Blackburn manager Dave Mackay as director of football and will appoint a head coach and assistant coach as soon as possible.

"It has to be a flexible arrangement," said Archibald. "Some days I might be upstairs, so I want stability on the training ground. Players need a reference point so I will be there as much as I can."

The player sold by Spurs to Barcelona is to recruit four players from Spain, but insists this is a short-term measure with future emphasis being placed on domestic youth.
