Spurs 6-0 South China - we wanted win for fans - JD

Jermain Defoe said the nature of the performance – not just the goals – was key as we completed the Barclays Asia Trophy with a 6-0 victory over South China FC in Hong Kong on Saturday night.
JD led the way with a hat-trick with Clint Dempsey and a fine free-kick from Andros Townsend also contributing. The sixth and opener on the night was an own goal from Tse Sean Ke Keung.
The players were disappointed with the defeat against Sunderland in the BAT on Wednesday night and there was a real intensity and zip about the display.
Jermain explained that there was also sense of wanting to put on a show for our fantastic support in Hong Kong and Asia.
“We said before the game that the fans are brilliant here and we wanted to win for them,” said Jermain.
“It doesn’t matter that it’s pre-seaso. Even in training we always want to win and if you don’t, you are upset.
“It’s important to get the winning mentality going into the season.
“We scored six goals but it wasn’t just the goals, the performance on a difficult pitch was really good.
"We passed it around well, the movement was good and the work rate. That’s what the gaffer wants, that intensity, pressing, working hard and when we get the ball, to keep it.”
As for his own display, JD added: “You know what I’m like, I love scoring goals and I just want to have a good season.
“I want to get off to a good start and it’s important not just for me but for all the lads that we feel fit and sharp. Training has been good and I felt great, sharper than ever. I’m looking forward to the season starting.”
