John McDermott felt our Under-18s were good value for their win against Wolves at the weekend.
Anton Walkes’ opener was added to by a Kyle Walker-Peters strike and a Daniel Akindayini hat-trick in the second half as the lads cruised to a 5-1 victory at the Training Centre, further consolidating their position atop the Barclays Under-18 Premier League southern section table.
Reflecting on the contest, Academy Manager John was pleased we got the goals our early pressure warranted.
“For large parts of the game we were pretty convincing, although maybe we didn’t score the goals at the times when we were dominant,” John said.
“In the first 35 minutes I thought we were excellent. We had Wolves penned in and dominated proceedings.
“Daniel got his goals when the game wasn’t as smooth as it was earlier but I thought we were well worthy of the win. We played very well.”
Defender Walkes was back on the scoresheet on Saturday, having also found the target in recent matches at West Ham and Reading. He was singled out for praise afterwards, along with midfielder Lloyd Ross.
“Anton’s doing really well,” John added. “He’s shown vast improvement this year and the other player who has done similarly is Lloyd Ross. I was really pleased with Lloyd. Particularly since Christmas those two have come on leaps and bounds.”
