Spurs 5-1 Sunderland

Harry Kane scored his first Premier League goal and Emmanuel Adebayor helped himself to a brace as we hit Sunderland for five with a fine performance at the Lane on Monday evening.

The 20-year-old striker fired us into a second half lead on his full Premier League debut, as we hit back after falling behind to a Lee Cattermole opener for the Black Cats after 17 minutes. Adebayor levelled before Kane’s goal, the outstanding Christian Eriksen made it 3-1 on 77 minutes, Adebayor struck again four minutes from time and Gylfi Sigurdsson rounded off a great night with an injury time fifth.

Tim Sherwood made four changes to the side which lost at Anfield last Sunday, with Vlad Chiriches, Paulinho, Adebayor and Kane coming in for Jan Vertonghen, Nabil Bentaleb, Sigurdsson and Roberto Soldado.

It was certainly an eventful contest with plenty of chances for either side on a wet evening at the Lane and we were on the front foot from the outset. Just six minutes in Nacer Chadli’s delightful ball inside full-back Marcos Alonso set Aaron Lennon free to the byline but his cutback was blocked by the defender. Seconds later, the Sunderland man deflected Eriksen’s cross from the right which had Vito Mannone scrambling back to tip it over for a corner.

The visitors, rooted to the foot of the table going into the game, were a danger themselves and almost grabbed the lead when Wes Brown’s far post header from Adam Johnson’s free-kick went just past the upright on 14 minutes.

Three minutes later though, they were ahead. It was a gift of a goal as well, with Chiriches receiving a ball from Hugo Lloris and playing it square across the defence, right into the path of Cattermole who gratefully received the ball and slid it first time into the back of the net from 25 yards.

To be fair, we reacted well to the setback and within two minutes, Kane almost levelled when Chadli’s 25-yard volley fell at his feet, but the young striker’s shot was straight at Mannone.

Kyle Naughton fizzed in a long-range effort on 22 minutes when Eriksen laid a free-kick into his path, while the Dane was the creator again when he found Kane inside the area, his shot was blocked by Santiago Vergini and from the rebound, Adebayor fired over.

Lloris needed a smart save to keep out Fabio Borini at the other end and on 28 minutes we drew level. Eriksen worked a yard of space on the left and delivered a lovely cross which Adebayor touched in with his thigh from six yards out past Mannone.

Kane then tested Mannone with an angled shot after good work from Lennon, Rose hit a 25-yard left foot drive just past the top corner and good defending from Phil Bardsley at the far post denied Adebayor, who was waiting to prod home Eriksen’s low cross on 35 minutes.

And Eriksen was again to the fore on the stroke of half-time as his 25-yard free-kick whistled just wide as we ended the half on top, if not ahead.

The first opportunity of the second period was a long range effort from Johnson for the Black Cats which never troubled Lloris, while we had claims for a penalty waved away after Kane burst into the area and went down under the dual challenge of Bardsley and Carlos Cuellar.

We were quickly into our stride again and Sunderland needed some last-gasp defending to deny us, Alonso and Bardsley both getting crucial clearances ahead of Adebayor and Eriksen respectively.

But there was nothing the visitors could do in the 59th minute to prevent Kane with his landmark goal. We worked it well down the left before Eriksen delivered another magnificent cross which Kane reacted first to, poking the ball past Mannone to fire us ahead.

Moments later, Kane was involved again, this time suffering a nasty accidental clash of heads with Brown, both players needing lengthy treatment. To their credit, both returned to the action, which continued to see us dominate, Naughton seeing a long range drive deflect off Alonso in our next opportunity.

Then with 13 minutes remaining, Eriksen grabbed his well-deserved goal with a fine effort. Adebayor led the charge down the right flank, played it inside to Chadli who moved the ball along one more to the Danish midfielder some 22 yards from goal. He took one touch and drilled a low left-foot shot which Mannone got a hand to but couldn’t keep it out, Eriksen’s ninth of the campaign.

That wasn’t the end of the scoring as we made it 4-1 on 86 minutes. Kane beat Vergini and burst into the area, firing a shot which was too hot for Mannone to handle and although it may have trickled over the line, Adebayor was there to add the finishing touch, just to make sure.

A great evening was added to two minutes from time when 18-year-old Serbian Milos Veljkovic came on for Paulinho to make his senior debut, and the icing on the cake came in stoppage time, as Adebayor found Younes Kaboul inside the area and his clipped cross was turned home by substitute Gylfi Sigurdsson for 5-1, our biggest home win of the season.
