Spurs 5-1 Stoke - Mauricio's reaction

09 December 2017|Tottenham Hotspur

Mauricio Pochettino felt the players’ hard work finally paid dividends aganst Stoke.

Determined to get back to winning ways after a tricky recent spell in the Premier League, the team delivered in style.

There was no looking back once Heung-Min Son’s cross was deflected into his own net by Stoke’s Ryan Shawcross on 21 minutes.

Sonny, Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen and Mousa Dembele all tried their luck in the first half before Sonny slotted home from Dele Alli’s defence-splitting pass for 2-0 on 53 minutes.

Harry powered home a header 90 seconds later for 3-0 and then rifled home for 4-0 before Christian celebrated his 200th Spurs appearance by finishing from Sonny’s break and pass for five. It could have been more but for Jack Butland in the Stoke goal.

“The first goal helped us and the way we scored - you always need that little bit of luck, that luck that wasn't there for us against Watford or West Brom,” said Maurcio.

“The team always showed good performance and when you keep going and work hard, the reward always arrives.

“It was so important to get the three points. I’m very pleased and now we keep going and prepare for Wednesday (Brighton at home) because tomorrow we start again. It’s dffcult to enjoy too a coaching team we cannot stop to enjoy, we always think about helping the team to be ready to compete again.”

There was extra praise for Sonny, who took the game to Stoke from the first whistle and was a constant threat - setting up the first and fifth goals and scoring the second himself.

“He deserves that praise and full credit, he played very well and I’m so happy with him and the team’s performance.”
