Spurs 4-2 Burnley - Mauricio's verdict
14 January 2015|Tottenham Hotspur
Mauricio Pochettino felt we deserved to progress to the fourth round of the FA Cup after recovering from a 2-0 deficit to beat Burnley 4-2 in Wednesday night’s third round reply at the Lane.
We were stunned by early goals from Marvin Sordell and Ross Wallace inside seven minutes but once Paulinho reduced the deficit in the 10th minute, the comeback looked on.
Etienne Capoue struck his second Spurs goal and first in almost a year to hand us the lead in first half injury time before Vlad Chiriches matched the Frenchman with his second career goal for us to make it 3-2 in the 49th minute - his first since the win at Fulham in December, 2013.
Danny Rose slid home from Roberto Soldado’s cross to make it three goals in nine minutes for 4-2 and Burnley had little in return as we ended the match with 16 shots to the visitors’ four and a debut off the bench for Academy youngster Josh Onomah.
The win sets-up a fourth round tie at the Lane against Leicester City on Saturday, January 24, kick-off 3pm. Ticket news here…
“We showed good character,” said Mauricio. “It was a difficult start and important to come back into the game quickly to believe and move forward.
"We scored to get back to 2-2 before half-time and we deserved to go to the next round, we were better than Burnley. I’m happy with the result and to go into the next round.
“We’ve played more games than other teams in the Premier League this season and we’ve had a tough period.
“We have a strong squad and I’m happy for the players who had the opportunity to play. It’s good to have players who are pushing the squad and make my decision hard every week.”
