Spurs 4-1 Sunderland - Mauricio's verdict

16 January 2016|Tottenham Hotspur

Mauricio Pochettino felt a surge of confidence when the team deservedly took the lead in the second half of Saturday’s fine 4-1 win against Sunderland.

Once again, we dominated at the Lane, underlined by a final shot count of 26-5 and 68 per cent possession over the 90 minutes.

But we were rocked just five minutes before half-time when Patrick van Aanholt opened the scoring with Sunderland’s first effort at goal.

Thankfully, Christian Eriksen fired home an equaliser within a minute and once Mousa Dembele struck for 2-1 on the hour, we had take off. Christian soon made it 3-1 and Harry Kane wrapped it up with goal number 15 for the season in all competitions 10 minutes from time.

“In football, it’s always about confidence and when we scored the second goal the team was lifted in confidence and energy,” said Mauricio.

“After that, it was 4-1 and maybe we deserved to score once or twice more.

“I’m very happy. It was a very important reaction (to the defeat against Leicester) and we’re very pleased with that. It was a fantastic performance again.

Below: Mauricio speaks to Spurs TV after the 4-1 win

“We need to learn, we’re young but this is the way we need to follow, to work hard and to be ready for the next competition which is Leicester in the FA Cup (replay on Wednesday), an important competition. We need to try to win that game to stay in the next round.”

Mauricio on going behind against the run of play…
“That’s football, sometimes it’s crazy and you need a great effort to play. It was another great performance from the team, great effort and we’re very pleased with our team, our squad and happy because it was an important three points after the defeat against Leicester.”

Mauricio on the importance of Christian’s quick equaliser…
“It was very important to score quickly and go in at 1-1 at half-time. In the second half we had the capacity to get the result and we fully deserved the win.”

Mauricio on Mousa…
“It was an important goal and a good performance from Mousa, He’s back from injury in the last few weeks and we’re happy with him.”

Mauricio on Christian…
“He had some chances and the goalkeeper had a very good performance. You always need a bit of luck. I’m very pleased for Christian and happy with the squad, it was a fantastic reaction.

Mauricio on Kieran Trippier’s display…
“It was a great performance. I think he deserves a lot of praise in the way he worked from the beginning of the season and his competition with Kyle (Walker) is fantastic, just like Ben Davies and Danny Rose. We have four full-backs at a very good level.”
