Spurs 3-2 Everton - Mauricio's reaction

Mauricio Pochettino feels we’re hitting levels of confidence at the perfect time.

The team put together another performance to remember to beat Everton 3-2 on Sunday and secure a record run of nine consecutive home wins in the Premier League. That topped the previous best mark of eight achieved across two seasons from March-August, 2009.

“We played with a lot of confidence, always knowing what we needed to do in every moment and that was fantastic,” said Mauricio.

“The team showed big confidence and that’s important for us because now we’re at the most important period with the Premier League and FA Cup and we have that consistency and that belief.”

For 80 minutes, it was hugely impressive stuff up against an Everton team that arrived at the Lane unbeaten in nine in the Premier League and with five clean sheets in the last seven.

Harry Kane’s belter of an opening goal on 20 minutes paved the way for one of our best spells of the season as Joel Robles denied Harry on-one-one, Victor Wanyama struck the post and Christian Eriksen fired just wide.

The second half started just as well as our high press caught out Everton and Harry finished clinically for 2-0.

It looked like game over with 10 minutes left but Romelu Lukaku pulled a goal back and Everton pushed for an equaliser. Dele Alli looked to have made it safe at 3-1 on 92 minutes only for Enner Valencia to pull another goal back seconds later but that was finally that and another crucial three points in the bag.

“Overall, it was a very good win, a fantastic performance,” added Mauricio. “Okay, in the end we’re a little disappointed to concede the last goal. The first can happen, the second when the game was over after Dele scored, I’m a little disappointed with because we showed a lack of concentration and that can’t happen again, but without that, we played very well.

“We played a fantastic first half and the second half we dominated and played with good quality and a high tempo. I’m very pleased for everyone and we have to keep going.”

What pleased you the most?
Mauricio: “Everton was a very difficult opponent, we knew that. We played much, much better and if you see the score, 3-2, maybe that’s not fair (a fair reflection) because that makes it look like a very competitive game but we deserved more. Sometimes that happens. The most important thing for us was to get the three points, important to keep our position in the table fighting for the highest position and to be there if Chelsea fail.”

How about setting a Club record for consecutive home wins (nine) in the Premier League era?
Mauricio: “To break that record is fantastic for us and the fans. It’s a big achievement to make history and fantastic for the players to show that quality at home.”

Finally, Hugo made his 200th appearance for the Club today, what are you thoughts on the skipper and that milestone?
Mauricio: “It’s amazing for him and I congratulate him. Hugo is a great professional, a great goalkeeper and it’s fantastic for him."
