Spurs 3-2 Chelsea U18s - John's verdict

21 October 2013|Tottenham Hotspur

The 3-2 victory our Under-18s claimed over Chelsea at the weekend was “an excellent advert for youth football”, according to John McDermott.

Goals from Will Miller and Daniel Akindayini saw us go into the half-time interval with a 2-1 lead, before Anthony Georgiou added our third after the restart.

Chelsea pulled one back again soon after, but we were solid enough to retain our slender lead, while Nathan Oduwa missed a late penalty.

“I thought it was an excellent advert for youth football in this country,” enthused Academy Manager John after the game.

“It was an extremely tough game, and both sides had opportunities to win.

“We played really well in the first half, and I thought Chelsea were excellent for 30 minutes in the second half and we had to be resilient, and then it was a little bit of a basketball game at the end.

“When you’ve got 28 players on the pitch of that quality (both sides used all three allowed substitutes); I just thought it was a good game to be in, and I thought both sides put on a really good advert for youth football.”

John was also pleased with the way our lads retained concentration after conceding a goal three minutes before the break, adding that he has a lot of respect for his counterparts at Chelsea as the Blues ran us close in Saturday’s game.

“I thought that goal before the break might have been a momentum changer a little bit for Chelsea, but overall I think 3-2 was probably just deserts,” John added.
