Spurs 3-1 Sunderland U21s - Ugo's verdict
11 April 2016|Tottenham Hotspur
Ugo Ehiogu felt our Under-21s 'did White Hart Lane justice' with a fine win against Sunderland on Monday night.
The youngsters have had a tough run of late but were back to their best to beat the title-challenging Black Cats in the Barclays U21 Premier League.
Shayon Harrison led the way with a fine hat-trick - his first for the Under-21s - as the team showed all sides of the game, attacking prowess to get ahead, defensive unity to keep Sunderland at bay in the second half and then a clinical finish to secure the points late on.
“Sunderland are up there challenging, we knew they would be tough opponents and the pleasing thing was the spirit,” said Ugo.
“We watched the first team game yesterday and some of the comments the manager made afterwards were about fight, belief and intensity and I thought the players had that tonight.
“They’ve had a lot of stick - and probably rightly so with the games we’ve lost.
“We were looking over our shoulders wondering if we might still get relegated, there was still a chance so we said to them ‘show us you’re a footballer, show us you can be at Tottenham Hotspur’ and the players showed that.
“The players are learning - some have to learn quicker – and this was a glimpse of what they are capable of.
“That’s the disappointment (over the season). We work with these players every day and know how good they can be but we haven’t showed it enough, certainly not at White Hart Lane. Tonight, I thought we did it justice.”
