Spurs 3-1 Qarabag - Mauricio's verdict

17 September 2015|Tottenham Hotspur

Mauricio Pochettino said the team found ‘the perfect answer’ after falling behind against Qarabag, responding with a 3-1 win in our Europa League Group J opener on Thursday night.

Heung-Min Son stole the show with a quickfire double on his home debut to turn the game around before half-time with Erik Lamela securing victory four minutes from time.

Kevin Wimmer and Kieran Trippier made their Spurs debuts and first starts while Clinton Njie came off the bench for his debut in the second half. Tom Carroll, Andros Townsend and Lamela also started for the first time this term.

The Azerbaijan champions showed why they had lost just once in six European outings this season with a bright display at the Lane and took the lead when Richard Almeida fired home from the penalty spot on seven minutes.

We looked lively ourselves though with Son, Townsend, Lamela and Dele Alli buzzing around the box and Son’s second, created with the dancing feet of Alli, was a joy to watch.

That goal saw 'Sonny' become the first Spur to score twice on his home debut since Mido against Portsmouth in February, 2005.

“It was a very good debut for Sonny, I’m happy for him,” said Mauricio. “He’s a very nice guy and I’m happy because he scored twice.

“I’m happy with the character of the team, happy with Erik who scored as well and happy with the performance.

“Qarabag are a good team, they played well and it wasn’t an easy game.

“It was also difficult after we conceded the penalty in the first few minutes but I’m very pleased with the players because we showed character, personality and played well in a difficult period.

“It wasn’t easy but the answer was perfect for the team and in the end we fully deserved the result.

“We’re a young team, a young squad and there were debuts for a lot of players, so we can look back and take a lot of positives.

“Now we need to prepare for Palace, try to perform well again and try to win on Sunday.”
