Spurs 3-0 United - Mauricio's verdict
10 April 2016|Tottenham Hotspur
Character, personality, energy, belief – Mauricio Pochettino said the performance against United had all that and more as we swept to a 3-0 win at the Lane on Sunday.
United provided the stern test we expected but we always had the edge - 16 efforts to United’s eight, eight to one on target and numerous saves from David De Gea back that up and once Dele Alli fired us into the lead on 70 minutes, there was only one winner.
Eight minutes after Hugo Lloris made his only save to deny Anthony Martial, Harry Kane found Christian Eriksen and he put a cross on a plate for the midfielder to bury goal number eight in the Premier League.
That was the first of three goals in six memorable minutes. Toby Alderweireld headed home Erik Lamela’s free-kick for 2-0 after 74 minutes and the Argentine winger scored the goal his performance deserved to wrap it up on 76.
The result means we remain seven points adrift of Leicester City with five matches remaining.
“It was a fantastic performance and full credit to our players for the energy and character they showed,” said Mauricio.
“It was difficult because at the beginning of the day Leicester won, United were then stuck in the traffic (the game kicked off 30 minutes late) and that changed our habits. It was difficult from the beginning but in the second half we showed a very good performance and I feel proud of our players.”
How did those three goals in six minutes feel?
Mauricio: “It was a great moment for the crowd, and for us. A 3-0 win against United is fantastic. It’s been 15 years to feel a win like that against United (at the Lane).”
What about the performance as whole?
Mauricio: “You have to be focused and concentrate during 95 minutes and we showed character, personality and belief, and kept fighting. It was fantastic how we played and how the players believed. We need to keep working hard and keep fighting for the next few games.”
Where does this result stand in the last couple of seasons?
Mauricio: “After nearly two seasons here there are lots of games where we feel proud. It’s important to improve every day, try to learn and we feel proud after two seasons here.”
Finally, a word on Erik Lamela, who worked relentlessly and deserved his goal…
Mauricio: “He worked really hard in training and the gift for him today was fantastic, he worked hard, played well and scored. It was a great day for him.”
