Spurs 2-4 Chelsea U18s - Kieran's verdict

Under-18s Coach Kieran McKenna was left to reflect on a “very disappointing” result as our youngsters slumped to a 4-2 defeat to Chelsea on Saturday.

Goals from Luke Amos and Cameron Carter-Vickers saw us twice take the lead at the Training Centre, but Chelsea scored four times after the break to condemn us to our first Barclays Under-18 Premier League defeat of the season.

Tom Glover also saved a penalty from Chelsea’s hat-trick hero Tammy Abraham during a shaky period immediately following the half-time interval – and it was that spell in particular that left Kieran looking for improvement.

“We had an outstanding first 30 minutes of the game, got ourselves one goal up and it should have been more, but when Chelsea had momentum after half-time we weren’t able to see that spell out without conceding a goal,” he said.

“I was really disappointed with the start to the second half and the goals we conceded.

“I don’t think I’ve been involved in a game against Chelsea – who are a good side – where we’ve had more of the ball or more chances, so it was disappointing not to take our opportunities.

“There are certainly lessons to be learned about how to win a football match at the moment, because we were a little bit naive in the second half, certainly for the first five or 10 minutes.”
