Spurs 2-3 West Ham U18s - John rues 'flat performance'

14 October 2013|Tottenham Hotspur

John McDermott rued a “flat performance” from our Under-18s against West Ham United at the weekend.

Joe Pritchard was on target, as was Nathan Oduwa from the penalty spot, as we twice came from going a goal down to draw level against the Hammers at the Training Centre, before the visitors clinched the winner three minutes from time.

We faced an uphill battle practically from the off, after West Ham forward Kieran Bywater capitalised on a defensive lapse and subsequent charged down clearance to slide the ball home with just 90 seconds on the watch.

Academy Manager John was left to look back on that opening, and subsequent failure to make the Hammers pay, with regret.

“The start was very disappointing and although we got back into the game, it’s disappointing that we weren’t able to start better, and to react to that (opening goal).

“When we did have the opportunity maybe to turn the heat up a little bit, we didn’t, and I thought we were too nice. We played nicely but without any real penetration or thrust.”

Goalkeeper Luke McGee made two fine diving saves in the second period when the Hammers were 2-1 up, and John praised the keeper’s efforts.

“I thought Luke had a very competent performance, but for all of our possession, I can’t remember their goalkeeper making many saves.

“It was quite a flat performance.”
