Spurs 2-1 United - Mauricio’s emotional, perfect day
Sun 14 May 2017, 23:30|Tottenham Hotspur
Mauricio Pochettino was full of pride and emotion after the team delivered a performance to match the occasion as we said goodbye to White Hart Lane on Sunday.
The 2-1 victory over Manchester United meant so much, not least securing second place in the Premier League, a Club best in the competition and our highest finish since 1962-63.
It also meant we completed a season at the Lane unbeaten - 19 league games, four in the domestic cups - for only the fourth time in our history and matched another Club best of 14 straight league wins at home, achieved just once before over two seasons, 1986-87 and 1987-88.
Victor Wanyama powered home his header from Christian Eriksen’s corner in the sixth minute as we dominated. Harry Kane hit the crossbar, Dele Alli and Heung-Min Son were denied by David De Gea.

Kane wasn’t to be denied again, connecting with another Eriksen assist three minutes into the second half. Wayne Rooney pulled a goal back late on but this was our day.
“It was a perfect performance and we deserved that victory, I’m so happy for our fans and we’re so proud of everyone,” said Mauricio, speaking to us as he took it all in on the players and legends’ final lap around White Hart Lane.
“It’s unbelievable, very emotional,” he continued. “It’s a great moment to share with everyone, we’re so happy to be here to say goodbye to White Hart Lane - and to welcome the new stadium.”
What did you think about the performance against United?
Mauricio: “The performance was fantastic and from the beginning, we were aggressive and played to win. We had control of the game, we played better and deserved the victory.”
How about finishing second?
Mauricio: “Second position is fantastic for us, 80 points and unbeaten at White Hart Lane in the last season here, there are a lot of things to be proud of.”
Could this day be any more special?
Mauricio: “It’s fantastic to get the three points, we’re second in the table and that’s a big achievement for the Club and this group of players. The fans were fantastic, like all season, the energy and the atmosphere was great. Our fans helped us a lot and to be unbeaten, we’ve written history here.”
Any final thoughts?
Mauricio: “I think I’m a very lucky guy because to share the history of this Club, in that special moment, is so lucky and I am so happy. I want to congratulate all, and to say ‘thank-you’ again to all the players, the fans, the staff, my staff, because all together we worked so hard to try to achieve all that we achieved this season.”
