Spurs 2-1 FC Sheriff - Andre's verdict
08 November 2013|Tottenham Hotspur
Andre Villas-Boas took 'great satisfaction' from securing an early passage into the knockout phase of the Europa League after our Matchday Four win against FC Sheriff on Thursday night.
Erik Lamela’s first goal for Spurs and Jermain Defoe’s record-breaking penalty were enough to topple the Moldovan champions 2-1 at the Lane and make it four wins out of four in Group K.
Anji’s late winner against Tromso prevented us guaranteeing top spot on the night. The Russians are now five points behind us with two fixtures remaining. One more point and we’ll go into the last 32 as group winners.
Once again, Sheriff proved tricky opponents, restricting the space in front of goal and always ready to break quickly.
“It was a good second half performance, good combination play, more penetration, more shots, more crosses,” reflected Andre.
“It’s a pity they scored when we were on top of the game because we could have gone on to score some more.
“We take great satisfaction in qualifying after four games and we’re just one point off top place.”
Andre couldn't help but smile on the news that Anji had scored in the fourth minute of added time to beat Tromso. Before that, we were seven points clear with two games remaining, but we now need another point to secure top spot.
“These things can happen and it’s good also as it keeps us on our toes for the remainder of the games,” he added. “We want to qualify first, but we also want to leave a good impression for the fans and honour the shirt that we wear.”
