Spurs 2-1 Burnley - Mauricio's verdict

Sat 20 December 2014, 18:30|Tottenham Hotspur

Mauricio Pochettino felt we deserved a greater margin of victory against Burnley.

We ended a tough encounter with a 2-1 victory after enjoying 65 per cent of possession and a shot count of 23-9 in our favour at White Hart Lane.

Harry Kane headed home his 14th of the season as we controlled the early exchanges only for the Clarets to shock us with Ashley Barnes’ equaliser on 27 minutes, a bolt out of the blue that flew into the top corner.

Undetered, we pushed on again and after a couple of chances went begging, Erik Lamela opened his Premier League account with a cracker, a curler from 25 yards into the far corner. It was a goal worthy of winning any game and did just that.

Burnley remained a threat throughout and Hugo Lloris was forced to deny Danny Ings twice at the start of the second half and then turn away Ross Wallace’s free-kick late on.

At the other end, Tom Heaton denied Nacer Chadli, who also had a goal disallowed for offside on an impressive return to the starting line-up in the Premier League.

The win was the perfect end to a big week with a dramatic late victory at Swansea, booking a place in the semi-finals of the Capital One Cup in style against Newcastle and another three points in the bag against Burnley.

“It’s been a great six days, three games, three victories,” said Mauricio.

“It’s been a very important week for us and I’m happy for the players and for our supporters.

“Burnley scored with their first shot and that’s always difficult. They were a physical team, playing balls up to a strong striker but we’re fighting and we played well.

“It wasn’t easy for us after three games in a week and it was important to show character. We never give up, we keep fighting and keep going. I think we played very well for long periods.

“I think in the end the result didn’t reflect the performance because we deserved more of a gap in the scoreline. But in the end, three points is very important for us."
