Spurs 2-1 Arsenal - Mauricio's verdict

Sat 07 February 2015, 16:20|Tottenham Hotspur

Mauricio Pochettino reflected on a ‘fantastic performance’ and his first North London derby victory as we put Arsenal to the sword at the Lane on Saturday.

Harry Kane struck twice to cancel out Mezut Ozil’s 11th-minute opener to send our  fans into raptures.

Ozil scored against the run of play and the Gunners were indebted to goalkeeper David Ospina, who kept out Harry, Danny Rose and Ryan Mason as we fired in 11 shots to Arsenal’s two in the first half.

Undetered, Harry converted from close range to level the scores on 55 minutes and after Hugo Lloris turned away Danny Welbeck’s curler, we were back on the offensive with Ospina denying Nabil Bentaleb and Jan Vertonghen’s header cleared off the line.

With five minutes remaining, Bentaleb angled a cross from the left and Harry planted a classic centre-forward’s header back across Ospina and home.

“I jumped, I shouted, it was a special moment, a brilliant moment,” said Mauricio when asked how he celebrated.

“It was a fantastic performance. I’m very pleased for the players and congratulate them for a fantastic game. I’m very happy for our supporters. It was a great atmosphere at White Hart Lane.”

Mauricio explained that it was a case of ‘continue doing what you are doing’ when he spoke to the players at half-time.

“We said ‘keep going in the same way’ because we didn’t deserve to be 1-0 down,” he said. “It was a brilliant game and we fully deserved the victory.

“Our performance was great because in front of us was a tough team like Arsenal. It’s always a special game. We showed a special energy and it’s important to keep this feeling.

“We have to keep going, look forward and move onto the next game now.”

The games come thick and fast with another huge encounter in the Premier League against Liverpool next up at Anfield on Tuesday night.
