Spurs 2-0 Chelsea (FAYC) - Kieran's verdict

06 March 2015|Tottenham Hotspur

Kieran McKenna paid tribute to a fine defensive display after our Under-18s beat Chelsea 2-0 in the first leg of our FA Youth Cup semi-final.

Clinical finishes from Josh Onomah and Kazaiah Sterling secured the two-goal lead going into the second leg at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday week, March 18.

Just as key on the night though was the clean sheet against a Chelsea team that had racked up 17 goals in their previous four ties.

“First and foremost we defended well as a team, the forwards and midfielders all showed desire and intelligence in their defending but special mention to the back four unit and Cameron Carter-Vickers within that, he was outstanding.,” said coach Kieran.

“To keep a clean sheet against a strong attacking Chelsea was really pleasing.

“I thought the players showed tremendous character. We knew it was going to be a tough game against a good Chelsea side so there were periods where we had to defend but we did that very well.

“To score two goals, to have some outstanding individual performances and to keep a clean sheet with so much character and excellent defending made it a really good night.

“We’ll now go to Stamford Bridge and not just look to hang on to our lead, we’ll look to impose ourselves like we did in the first half here and try to win the game."
